Women set to rock for shelter

There are few devices more effective at getting bands to come out and play than the power of a benefit. Who can resist playing a show when it's helping out mankind?

But Women Rockin' 4 Women attracts a special batch of Dallas-area acts: All have women members. That includes Tiffany Shea Band, Six For Twelve, Eden Automatic, Frognot, Triprocket and the Deadbeats.

The event was founded last year by Tiffany Poinsett, who performs with the Deadbeats. It benefits the New Beginning Center for victims of domestic violence.

"The thing that's special about the event is that it attracts all these local bands with female members," says April Samuels, drummer for Frognot. "When you see how many there are playing, you realize what a stronger role women are playing. I didn't even realize there were this many bands with female musicians going on until we started doing this."

The event is May 6, beginning at 9:30 p.m., at four Deep Ellum clubs: Club Clearview, Curtain Club, the Rock and the Liquid Lounge. More than 15 bands are scheduled to perform.

Attendees pay a single charge to get into all venues: $6 for over 21, $9 for ages 17-20. There are also door prizes, such as concert tickets, T-shirts and CDs. Sponsors include bandwear.com, Bill's Records, Body Structures, Daddy Jack's Wood Grill, Hard Rock Cafe and more.

Women Rockin' 4 Women is a nonprofit organization of women musicians working to prevent domestic violence. Visit the Web site at www.womenrockin4women.org or call the hotline at 214-344-4720.
